The potting shed might conjure up a twee image of an English country garden and elderly chaps wearing tweed caps and smoking their pipes, but for keen gardeners, the potting shed is an essential item. Not only is a place to store all those garden bits and pieces, such as pots, bulbs, small tools and so on, but it’s also a place to grow on your seedlings and plants.

The Potting Shed Guide

The potting shed might conjure up a twee image of an English country garden and elderly chaps wearing tweed caps and smoking their pipes, but for keen gardeners, the potting shed is an essential item. Not only is a place to store all those garden bits and pieces, such as pots, bulbs, small tools and so on, but it’s also a place to grow on your seedlings and plants.

On top of its practical uses, a potting shed can also fulfil a function as a little garden retreat. So a potting shed is something between a shed, a greenhouse and a summerhouse – surely every garden should have one?

The potting shed’s position

Siting your GardenEco potting shed is important. It needs to be in a shady area of your garden, but not in a dark corner, or your seedlings will never receive the light they need to get growing. Avoid any areas in the shadow of tall trees or buildings, as you’ll block out your natural light, and your shed could end up being damp. A south-facing shed should receive natural light throughout the day.

If you’re a vegetable grower, you’ll probably want to put your potting shed somewhere near your veg patch, while flower-mad gardeners may choose a spot that affords them all the benefits we have already mentioned, along with a view of a beautiful border, and a short walk to take out trays of young plants or bring in bulbs,

Remember that your potting shed will need a solid level base, so you may need to prepare the site, making it level, adding hardcore or gravel depending on your soil type. A layer of concrete, or concrete slabs will make a sturdy base for your potting shed. A damp-proof membrane can be laid before you erect your potting shed.

What to grow in your eco potting shed

Potting sheds usually feature a large glass window, which not only offers you plenty of light to see what you are doing – whether it’s sowing seeds, propagating or potting bulbs – but also offers a warm and light place for your tender plants and young seedlings. If you have a greenhouse, you might use the potting shed for any overflow, but for anyone who doesn’t have the space for a greenhouse, the potting shed can provide just that extra bit more room.

If you’re keen to grow your own veg, you’ll notice that on many packets of vegetable seed you can start sowing much earlier if you’re growing inside, so your potting shed can help you get a head start on cucumbers, courgettes and squash (April instead of May) as well as tomatoes.

It’s also a handy place to overwinter tender perennials such as pelargonium’s and fuchsias, which would otherwise perish in the winter frosts – a great money saver. If you don’t have room to do this, it’s worth at least taking some cuttings and keeping them in the potting shed.

And if you’ve room, remember to add in a comfy chair and a pile of seed catalogues and gardening mags, so that you can sit and enjoy a warming cuppa in your little garden retreat!
